I was thinking that it would be a neat idea to share my first sewing project EVER! Actually I was thinking bigger picture here… I was thinking that it would be cool if all sewers shared their first sewing project EVER! I think it would be so neat to see where everyone started. I bet there would be an amazing array of different projects, and it would be so awesome to somehow compile everyone’s first project somehow. Maybe in a book?!?! This book would serve as either a great sewing for beginners book, or (more likely) what we learned from all the mistakes we made! LOL. If you would like to contribute your first sewing project EVER… and you have to be truthful about it… I’d love to hear from you in the comments.
Maybe by showing you where my passion for sewing started, you will be inspired to try sewing too, or maybe just think my Hogs & Kisses Shorts are silly! Lol…
So… YES… My first ever sewing project… it was a pair of Hogs & Kisses boxer shorts!! (smile)
These beauties were constructed in my Grade 9 Home Ec class. I remember going to the fabric store with my mom (because we had to bring our own fabric to school for the project), we didn’t have much time there, and my mom quickly fell in love with this fabric. She then sneakily convinced me that it was the best fabric for boxer shorts in the whole world! She really loved it! I remember being very hesitant to say yes to this fabric because their were pigs on them, and I had recently put on some weight, and I didn’t want to bring more attention to pigs and fat and so on… You know how it is in grade 9! Anyways, I said yes to the fabric, and surprisingly no one called me a PIG! LOL…
These shorts really remind me of my mom… it’s probably the reason I still have them.
You might be thinking “WOW… these are really good for a first sewing project EVER!” (wink), LOL!! Well let me tell you… I was closely instructed by my grade 9 Home Ec teacher, and they were graded, so I made sure they were “perfect”. Having someone show me every little step is very beneficial when learning how to sew. That’s one of the reasons I really try to break my sewing tutorials down into simple easy steps, so that sewing is easily attainable to anyone. I love how my Home Ec teacher (I wish I remembered her name) took the time to clearly show everyone each step, and answer everyone’s questions throughout the process. Very handy when learning how to sew!
I even put on butt pockets on the back, and a faux fly flap on the front of the boxer shorts. So FANCY!
So I have 2 goals in posting about my super awesome first sewing project EVER! One is to inspire wanna-be sewers to try a new skill! Since I made these shorts so long ago, I don’t have a tutorial to make these exact boxer shorts, so I’ll be posting a round-up of 10 Free Sewing Patterns for Woman’s Casual Shorts (made by other awesome sewing bloggers) in my next post! They are very inspiring, and I just might make a pair of them for myself! (wink)
And goal number two is that I would really LOVE to see your first sewing project EVER! It would be super neat if you could comment with, what you made, where you made it, and when you made it! And if you want, I would LOVE to see your project as well. I don’t know if you can send photos through the comment section on this blog, so you could send me a photo to my email which is located at the very bottom of this page. Thanks so much lovely sewers! I can’t wait to see your awesome first sewing projects EVER! I’m excited!
Until next time, enjoy learning how to sew, and creating beautiful things everyday!
XO JCL
P.S. Here is a link to my other super awesome sewing projects!
And here is the link to my Changable Felt Letter Board that I got from Amazon! Well actually it was on my Christmas list this year, and my sweet Daddio got it from Amazon for me! LOVE YOU DADDY!
Love the fabric! There’s no way my 7th grade home ec teacher would have let any of the girls make boxer shorts but then again it was 1976! We had to make an apron or a skirt. I made a midi wrap skirt but I’d been sewing for a few years by then.
My first project was bean bags & a extra large tic tac toe gameboard that folded into a carrying case. I was 9 and made it with my Aunt’s help for our church. It was fun to make and play. It was still being used 25 years later when I went back for my Uncle’s funeral.
Thanks for inspiring me to take a trip down memory lane and try to recreate some of the projects I did so many years ago.
Thank you Billi so much for sharing your first sewing adventures!! I love all of your first projects!! Just hearing about them has inspired me. What a great idea to sew some travel game boards!! ?
I also would love to sew an apron! Interesting little fact: the reason I bought my sewing machine was because I found an apron pattern that I really wanted to make! But I never got around to it and have yet to sew an apron!! Thanks for reminding me and inspiring me to look into it again.
Love your comment!! Have a beautiful day! Hug!
Those look really nice. My first experience sewing was in school and I had to make a pair of Pajama pants.
Thanks Luci! Fun! Panama pants was my second sewing project ever! Love it!
I love the fabric your mom chose! And I think boxers are an interesting home ec sewing project. I know a lot of people did aprons, and I’ve heard of sweat pants too. My first project was a sort of boho blouse with a v-neck. I chose a lavender cotton for it and I wore it all the time until I outgrew it!
Thank you so much Kyla! I love it too… now. Lol. I still have yet to make an apron. I so want to. Thanks for reminding me! And a boho blouse sounds lovely. ❤️
I’m really upset because they are SO cute but I don’t know how to sew. I can mostly sew with a machine but I definitely cannot hand sew to save my life…. I hope I can learn how to make something like this, though. Maybe I’ll save money for a sewing machine! Would you be will to give me a guide on how I could make these?
There are some affordable sewing machines. You don’t need all the options that a lot of the more expensive sewing machines come with these days. They can be expensive and overwhelming. And I’ll be posting a round up of a bunch of awesome other seeers shorts patters. So stay tuned for that. It’s in the works. If I ever get around to making another pair I’ll forsite make a tutorial about it. Thanks so much for the question Kasia! ❤️❤️
My first sewing project was hair scrunchies!
So fun! Thanks for sharing Darcy!
It looks pretty good for it being your first time
Thanks so much Ella! I had a great instructor! ❤️
Aww ! That is so cute! I admire people who are so creative and can sew! I unfortunately cant!
I think you could if you wanted to. You would surprise yourself! ❤️Thank you Justyna!
Oh my I love that fabric!! My children are currently playing with my First home economics sewing project!… I must have build a sturdy puppy because it is still holding up after all these years! 🙂
Thanks so much Ashley!! So fun. A puppy! Love it! Thanks so much for sharing! ❤️
