DIY Wooden Floral Letter “I” Tutorial- Because I’s are Hard to Find!

If you have a kiddo with the name Ivy, Isla, Iris, Isabelle, or even Isaac or Ian this tutorial is for you! Really any “I” named person would love to have a wooden floral letter “I”… Right?!?! This freestanding wooden letter could be filled with anything, but because Ivy is a girly girl I chose to fill it with faux flowers and succulents. I may change it up and remove the flowers and add some more succulents and moss when I’m sick of the flowers. So many options with this little creative project. So here is a tutorial to make one too!

DIY WOODEN FLORAL LETTER “I” TUTORIAL

Materials Needed:

  • 8 1/2 feet of 4 inch by 1 inch wood boards (I bought 2 – 1 by 4 boards from Home Depot but didn’t need all the wood for this project)
  • Saw (you could get the wood pre-cut when you buy the wood at Home Depot, or have a super-duper handy man as a husband to cut it for you, or cut it yourself!!)
  • Nail gun
  • Wood glue
  • Floral arrangement foam (I got mine from Dollar Tree)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Faux flowers and Succulents ( I got mine from Walmart, Dollar Tree, and Home Sense) I linked some faux flowers and succulents that can be found on Amazon at the end of this post.
  • Wire cutters

METHOD TO MAKE DIY WOODEN FLORAL “I”

Step 1: Cut the wood pieces that you will need to build the wooden “I”. You will need…

  • 3 pieces of 14 inch wood
  • 4 pieces of  8 1/2 inch wood
  • 4 pieces of 5 inch wood
  • 4 pieces of 1 3/4 inch wood

At this point you could choose to either stain or paint the wood before filling it, I decided I liked the light coloured wood and just left it.

Step 5: Collect items that you would like to fill your wooden letter “I” with. I chose faux flowers and succulents.

Other Ideas include:

  • Succulents and moss (something I’m considering doing)
  • Old small child’s toys like toy cars
  • Pompoms (something else that I was considering creating)

Side Note: faux flowers can be very expensive!!! I bought mine at Walmart and the dollar store. I wish I could have spent more money on beautiful more realistic faux flowers, (which is one of the reasons I would like to switch them out in the future) but I could not justify $100s of dollars on flowers for this Wooden Floral Letter “I”.

In the end I added a couple leaves to the sides to give it a little more green. And that’s my Wooden Floral Letter “I” Tutorial! I hope it inspires you to create one too! I’d love to see what ideas you come up with for filling it!

This freestanding wooden floral letter “I” was used as a center piece for Miss Ivy Lynnkins baby doll themed 2nd birthday party. But you can make it for other occasions or to add a personalized touch of decor to your kiddos bedroom, bathroom, or playroom. I look forward to make another one for our playroom, probably on a smaller scale. Maybe this time I will fill it with pompoms and paint the wood a cute colour!! Until next time, enjoy creating personalized home decor, and creating beautiful things!
