The hooded kids towel! How can you resist the cuteness?!?! They are a must have to wrap the kids up in after their bath, and make the best towels for pool side adventures! We use both, over the head poncho type towels, and these open hooded towels, and although the poncho towels are awesome for the beach, I’m not 100% in love with the fact that the kids can’t put them on, or take them off by themselves, so they want me to put it on and take it off of them, 10 times a minute!! This tutorial on how to make hooded towels for kids alleviates this problem, because the kiddos can put it on themselves, and they don’t fall off! SCORE!
SIDE NOTE: If you are looking for a hooded blanket tutorial instead of a towel, I made this reversible hooded blanket tutorial, that is super fun and customizable. That tutorial can be found here!
Now onto the Hooded Towels for Kids Tutorial!! I decided to make this hooded towel a little special by personalizing it with Corbin’s name. You can add the child’s name too, or come up with a super awesome saying instead. Check out the sayings I came up with below… Lol! And follow along with this tutorial to learn how you can make one of these super cute, must have towels too!
HOW TO MAKE HOODED TOWELS FOR KIDS
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Absorbent Towel Fabric – I used Microfiber Terry Fabric (you could even use an old towel that you already own!)
- A fun Printed Fabric – I used Black and White Buffalo Check Fabric (for the back of the towel)
- A Plain Coloured Fabric (for name personalization)
- Coordinating Thread
- Scissors
- Sewing Machine
METHOD:
Step 1: Cut one large square out of your towel fabric and the same sized large square out of the patterned backing fabric (my black and white buffalo check fabric). My squares are 42 inches by 42 inches, but you can make yours bigger or smaller depending on the size of the little person you are making it for!
Step 2: Cut out the letters of the name you want to put on your towel! If you are not up to it you could skip this step… or you could go the distance and cut out the letters of a whole saying! Something like…
- Beach Bum
- Dry kids Rule
- Towel Snuggles
- This kid is DRY
- In da HOOD
- Hood Life
Lol… Let me know your creative hooded towel sayings??
Step 3: Applique your letters onto the top of your Patterned Backing fabric. Lay your letters face up, on the front side of your fun patterned fabric (my black and white buffalo check fabric), and use a zigzag stitch around the edges of your letters. Like this…
Step 4: Create the hood of your towel. Lay a piece of towel fabric on one of the corners of your square towel fabric to create a triangle. You can make the hood as big or as little as you want. If you are making your towel for a baby you would make it smaller, but this particular towel for (4 year old) Corbin, the two top sides of the triangle each measure 18 inches long.
Once you have your two triangles cut out (one patterned backing fabric and one towel fabric) sew them together along the longest edge (which will be the front of the hood). Sew them front sides facing each other, and then flip it right way out, and top stitch along that edge, with a 1/2 inch seam.
Step 5: Sew the body of the towel together. Sew the large square of patterned backing fabric and the towel fabric face sides together but leave at least 6 inches unsewn, so that you can flip the towel the right way out. It would be awesome if this unsewn area was located in the area that you will be adding the hood.
Step 6: Lay the hood fabric onto the printed backing fabric, with the printed backing fabrics facing each other. Sew the hood to the body of the towel.
Step 7: Flip the hood of the towel over so that the backing fabric is on the outside, and top stitch with a 1/2 inch seam all the way around the edge of the towel, including the edge of the hood. This will hide the unfinished edge inside the hood.
Step 8: DONE!!! Get your kids wet and dry them off with their new awesome personalized hooded towels!
TOTAL SIDE NOTE: Did you notice that this hooded towel has created a love between my kiddos that is very rare! Beware!! This towel might be a chick magnet! Lol… Ivy is loving on her brother much more than usual…
And then Corbin had enough and had to lock her out! LOL… I knew it wouldn’t last!
I hope you could follow along with this DIY Hooded Towels for Kids Tutorial, without actually seeing photos of the process. Sorry!! I actually made this towel for Corbin when he was a newborn, because hooded baby towels are the cutest!!! But we haven’t really used this towel until lately, because I made it WAY to big for him. OUPS! This sized towel would be best suited for a 4 year old child and up!
- If you want to adjust this towel for a baby I would suggest cutting the towel square to 2 feet by 2 feet, with a hood that has 9 inch sides.
Until next time, enjoy the water adventures with the kiddos, and create beautiful things everyday!
