Story behind this Harry Potter Baby Blanket! I have a beautiful friend whos sister is having a baby boy… SOON!!! So exciting! The baby is going to be sleeping in a Harry Potter Themed Nursery and my beautiful friend asked me if I could make her Harry Potter Blanket dreams come true, as a great addition to his new nursery! I jumped at the chance, and although Harry Potter isn’t quite my style, this experience has opened my eyes to the whole Harry World and all the cool Harry Potter nursery accessories there are to complete his nursery. So many fun ideas! I almost got sucked into wanting to make so many cute Harry themed items… Then I remembered I’m a parent and don’t quite have that much time in my creative life. But, I did make time to create this Reversible Hooded Baby Blanket and I’m excited to show you how to make one too!

This tutorial will include how to make a Reversible Hood so that the blanket can transforms into a Super Awesome Cape! You can be as imaginative as you like for what printed fabrics you use. I appliqued a super cute Harry Potter quote onto this baby blanket “Snuggle this Muggle” and then added some symbols that also represent Harry Potter. I also added the new baby boys super cute name, so that it is all his own! For life!! lol… You could use one side of super soft flannel fabric and the other side super cute printed cotton fabric or you could have 2 sides of flannel. It’s totally customizable and up to you. Use your imagination!! Now onto the Tutorial!

Materials Needed:

  • 2 – 36 inch by 36 inch flannel fabric (you could use quilting cotton or even minky fabric for one side if you wanted). In this tutorial I used one side flannel and the other side is a cotton fabric.
  • 2 – 14 inch by 14 inch pieces of coordinating flannel fabric.
  • Ruler
  • Chalk
  • Scissors or Rotary fabric cutter
  • Coordinating Thread
  • Sewing Machine

Method:

Step 1: Pick your supplies! This is the super fun part of creating for me. I love coming up with different patterns and designs. Since this reversible hooded blanket is for a new born baby, I wanted one side to be super soft to cuddle up in, and the other side I decided to play around with and make it out of a solid grey cotton fabric, which I then appliqued a super cute Harry Potter saying onto it, “Snuggle this Muggle.” You can decorate your blanket any way you would like, or keep it a solid piece of fabric with a cute pattern on it. The possibilities are endless for this project.

NOTE: It’s a good idea to prewash your fabrics before you sew with them as they could shrink, especially when you are using 2 different types of fabrics as I did in this project. Flannel fabric tends to shrink a bit more than cotton. You don’t want a wonky looking blanket after all your hard work!

Step 2: Measure out the hood pieces. from the one corner of your hood piece of fabric measure 14 inches and mark it with chalk. Repeat this 14 inch measurement on the other side to create a triangle. Like this…

Step 3: With your ruler line up the 2 14 inch marks that you made and cut your fabric with a rotary fabric cutter or mark with chalk and cut it out with scissors. This will create the triangle pieces that you will need for the hood. Like this…

Step 4: Repeat this step with the other piece of hooded fabric. Like this…

Step 5: Layer your 2 cut out hooded pieces with their face sides together, and sew the longest side with a 1/4 inch seam. Like this…

The stitching should look like this…

Step 6: Turn your hood the right way out and top stitch the long side of the hood. Like this…

The hood should now look something like this… minus the super cute harry potter glasses and scar and maybe with a super cute other pattern to it instead!

Step 7: Lay your hood on top of one of the sides of the blanket fabric with the blanket fabric face side up. Then sew the hood to the blanket with a 1/4 inch seam. Then it should look like this…

Note: Place the same fabrics face sides together so that the hood matches the fabric of the blanket when completed!

Step 9: Sew almost all the way around the edge of the blanket but don’t forget to leave about 10 inches open to be able to flip the blanket the right way out! This is a photo of the opening that I left open to flip the blanket, but before you flip it…

Step 10: Trim all the uneven edges off to reduce the bulk of the blanket.

I think this reversible hooded blanket turned out super cute! Especially for a Harry Potter loving kiddo! My kids have no idea who Harry Potter is yet and they both love this blanket. I have been hiding it in the closet for my friends baby, but Ivy seems to know it’s in there and wants it out. I’ll be making her one soon!

Here are photos of what each side of the hood looks like.

Then I quickly let the kids fight over it, to get some super cute shots of the blanket in action. I hope it is as loved at it’s new home as it is here!

Then I washed it and packaged it up for my friendlypoo!

I hope this post inspires you to make your own super cute customizable reversible hooded baby blanket that can turn into a cape! It is super quick to put together and would make an awesome baby shower gift for any baby. It could also be an awesome gift for any child as you can see my almost 2 year old and 3 year old also loved it! If you have any questions on how I did the applique of the blanket don’t hesitate to ask. All I did for the letters was look up a Harry Potter font on the computer and cut out the fabric to look like the same. I was also very impressed with how the flannel fabric letters popped when appliqued to the regular cotton blanket fabric. Have fun discovering your own appliqued pattern. I’ll post another example of my crazy appliqued quilt in a future post, they are fun. Until then, enjoy creating your own reversible hooded baby blanket, and creating beautiful things!

  • I love this blanket! It is so cute! I would love to make one exactly the way you did it. How did you add all the Harry Potter details? Do you have patterns that you can share or images? Do you think it would be an overkill if one side was like woodland and then the other side would be Harry Potter? I’m making a blanket for a baby shower gift and this person loves game of thrones and Harry Potter and beauty and the beast. Their nursery theme is woodland creatures. Originally I was just thinking about making a wooden creature pattern blanket but then when I saw this blog post I was like oh my gosh this is so cute. Any advice would be so amazing!

    Thank you for sharing.

    • Thanks Jennifer, I’d make 2 blankets!! lol! One that’s woodland themed for the nursery and the other Harry Potter themed that’s maybe a bit bigger so that the child can grow into it. wink! I just used a zigzag top stitch to add all the Harry Potter details, and I just cut them out myself by looking at images I googled online. They are not prefect but that’s what makes it special. I love your enthusiasm for creating! Have fun making something meaningful! xo

    • Thanks so much Shae! I just cute the letter out of some fabric and appliqued them on with a zigzag stitch. Have an awesome day!
