Salt Dough Recipe – Kids Christmas Handprint Ornaments!

Super easy Salt Dough Recipe! It’s kind of a tradition to make the kiddos hand prints each Christmas, but instead of buying a hand print kit each year we use this super easy salt dough recipe to create some dough to make our handprints. I’m guessing this tradition might end soon… other wise I’ll end up with tons of the kids hand prints. Eventually over the years I’d have enough to decorate a whole Christmas tree! But they are just so cute!

These are last years creations! Corbin was 2 1/2 and Ivy had just turned 1!

SALT DOUGH RECIPE INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup Salt
  • 1 cup Flour
  • 1/2 cup Water

Yes!! It’s just that easy!!!

DIRECTIONS TO MAKE SALT DOUGH

Step 1: Combine all ingredients in a bowl.

Step 2: Stir until it is all moist.

Step 3: Kneed salt dough until it is easy to work with.

Step 4: Roll out salt dough until flat. About 1/4 inch think.

Step 5: THE FUN PART! BE CREATIVE!!! We made hand and feet prints and then cut around them with a knife. But you could make any shape you want, use cookie cutters to make ornaments or gift tags.

Step 6: Poke a hole at the top of your salt dough to be able to hang after it is dry. You can use a straw or a skewer, or a small stick.

Step 7: Bake in oven at 200 F for 2-3 hours, flip it over half way through cooking.

Step 8: Let cool and decorate!! I just used acrylic paints to decorate the kiddos hand and feet prints, but you can use your imagination.

Step 9: After the paint is completely dry use a clear coat of sealant to protect your creations!

Aren’t Ivy’s mistletoes so cute?!?!?! The inspiration for her hand and foot print can be found here.

Don’t forget to write your child’s name and age on the back of the ornament, so you can look back and remember how small they once were!

I hope you are inspired to create some super cute ornaments for your own family. I’m thinking of sculpting an ornament out of this salt dough that represents our whole family. Stay tuned for that lovely creation. Lol. Until next time, enjoy creating some childhood mementos, and creating beautiful things!

P.S. Since making these ornaments I discovered a recipe to make whiter ornaments but it doesn’t use as easy ingredients as this one. If you are fully painting your ornament, like I did, my salt dough recipe is awesome, but if you want more of a white coloured ornament stay tuned for that recipe soon!
