I’m always looking for easy and quick to sew baby quilts, because so many friends are having babies in my life. It’s the season… and I loooove it! Quick and easy is essential for a busy mommy like myself. I don’t have tons of time on top of children, activities, gym, the house, and the blog… So… cute and simple is my go to! One super quick and easy baby quilt pattern is the Triangle Modern Quilt… also called the Thousand Pyramids Quilt! It’s just a repeating triangle shape that looks super awesome when all stitched together. If you want to learn how to make one too, just follow along. It’s fun to create! You can do it!
TRIANGLE MODERN QUILT PATTERN TUTORIAL
MATERIALS NEEDED FOR A TRIANGLE QUILT
- Different Printed Quilting Fabrics (I used 13 different prints for this particular triangle quilt)
- Triangle Ruler (my triangle ruler makes triangles from 2 to 6 inches in size, I made 6 inch triangles in this particular quilt)
- Rotary Cutter
- Fabric Cutting Mat
- Coordinating Thread
- Sewing Machine
METHOD TO MAKE A TRIANGLE QUILT
Step 1: Cut your Triangles. For this particular triangle quilt I used 16 different fabrics and cut 117, 6 inch triangles. At this size your completed triangle modern quilt will be 46 inches by 36 inches in size.
Step 2: Lay out your triangles into a pattern that you like. I tried to only have one print of each fabric per row and made sure that the fabric above and below were different as well. But you can have it as random as you like. Use 117 different fabrics if you want (lol… this quilt could be a great scrap buster if you have lots of 6 inch by 6 inch fabric scraps).
Here is an awesome info graphic that I designed, to quickly show you have to lay out your triangle baby quilt top! Your welcome! (wink)
Step 3: Start with one row of triangles at a time and start sewing them together. Like this…
Line up your edges exactly and sew with a 1/4 inch seam. The key to a triangle modern quilt is to have exactly the same triangle squares and exactly 1/4 inch seams through out! This will make sure that your points meet up nicely!
The first 2 triangles sewn together will look like this… Open it up and lay it next to the next triangle and match up the sides to sew the next triangle on. Like this…
Then it will look like this…
Keep on sewing in this pattern until you have all of your rows of triangles sewn together.
Step 4: Sew your rows of triangles together. If this quilt was tricky (which it really isn’t) this would be it. Line up the sides of your rows to sew together by matching up the points. When you lay the fabric down you will not be able to see the bottom fabric, so use your finger to feel the points matching up. Sew with a 1/4 inch seam. Like this…
Keep Sewing each row to the next, Until…
All of your rows are sewn together. It will look something like this… (happy face). Almost done!
Step 5: Trim away excess fabric on the sides… You can use scissors, or to be more exact use a straight edge (ruler) and a rotary cutter. Like this…
And you are DONE your triangle modern quilt pattern top! Congratulations! Take a few minutes to enjoy this moment of accomplishment…
Now make a quilt sandwich, quilt, and bind. LOL. I have made a little tutorial on how I make and bind my own quilts using the least amount of fabric. After you make a quilt sandwich, and quilt your baby triangle quilt, come back to check it out. Here is the Link:
HOW TO BIND A QUILT USING THE LEAST AMOUNT OF FABRIC TUTORIAL
I hope you find inspiration in this triangle modern quilt pattern tutorial to make your own. I think this is a super cute and easy quilt pattern to sew for the new baby in your life. It’s also an excellent way for a beginner sewer to move on from sewing squares together. Triangles are not hard to sew together at all. The trick is to make all your triangles the same size, and to sew with 1/4 inch seams throughout!
I hope you found this tutorial easy to follow. If you have any questions at all (as always), don’t hesitate to ask me. I love everything sewing related! Until next time, enjoy sewing and creating beautiful things everyday!
