Who makes a quilt as a nursing school project??? I know you think, “she is supa-dupa cray”, but when assigned a nursing school project that required being as creative as one can imagine, the first thing I thought was to make a quilt! I think that’s how a sewing addict brain works? Seems reasonable to me… Any excuse to make a quilt right?!?!
Hence, this Applique Quilt was born, and it makes me really happy!

So to tell you the truth, I graduated nursing school a few years ago, so this is a quilt that my family has been loving for years now. The kiddos love looking at all of the different pictures on it, and asking me what everything means… maybe not my favorite thing about this quilt, and at this point I have just resorted to telling them fairy tails about the the pictures because it’s easier, and more fun for the kiddos… Okay, Fine…to be honest I don’t remember what every picture was meant to represent. But at one time it did all have meaning.
I don’t want to bore you with nursing school assignments, but if you want to know the backstory of this quilt… A big part of nursing is learning how to make decisions about the care you provide, by taking all aspects of your clients health, environment, support networks (just to name a few determinants of health) into consideration.
So this quilt represents everything I took into consideration in caring for the students of an elementary school I had the opportunity to act as a community/school nurse for.
My goal however for this post is to show you that you can tell a story by making your own applique quilt, or just maybe… if you are a student and are assigned a creative project, maybe you will consider creating a quilt too!! wink!
MY APPLIQUE QUILT: A NURSING SCHOOL, DECISION MAKING FRAMEWORK (Creative) ASSIGNMENT
To humor you, I’ll attempt to give you a very quick synopsis of the quilts meaning, as I remember it today. Hopefully the take away will be finding creative ways to represent different ideas in quilting form. wink! Hopefully…
Okay, this is the school that I did my community nursing placement. It is a very accurate representation, right down to the roof shingles, and small bush beside the front steps.
These are the kids houses, and bushes in their neighborhood! Oh, and clouds, and sun (must have been spring or fall)!
The target and conversation hearts in the right upper corner have something to do with their relationships with their peers, the food represents their diet, and the eye ball represents the importance of eating eyeballs.
Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease! I believe there was an outbreak around the time I was at this school. No I didn’t give it to them….
Stressed out fairies (or maybe learning about stress, and make believe).
The community, the schools PAC, clothes climbing the mountain represents clothing climbing mountains (or maybe the kids growth?). The red headed girl thinking about cats, dogs, and blond haired girls represents healthy relationships (or obsessions… nightmares?)
The kids in the class… I made sure there were the correct number of boys and girls that were actually in the class (because I’m super accurate about stuff like that), along with their bald no-faced teacher (Although I don’t think he was actually bald, and pretty sure he had a face too… I hope he wasn’t insulted).
The whole quilt in all its glory!
And at the center of the whole quilt are my nursing standards that are coming out of a box, representing a major mistake in calculating the size of the letters compared to the size of the box, or how nurses think outside of the box, while considering their nursing standards, for everyone they care for.
Ivy loves to tell me all of the kids names… Alice, Chloe, Ivy, Corbin, Stinky… Poopoo…
I hope this Nursing Assignment Applique Quilt inspires you to create your own applique story quilt. Be creative, make it fun, make it amazing! The kids will love it!
Until next time, enjoy making schools assignments creative and a lot more work than they should be, and create beautiful things everyday!
XO JCL
What an amazing quilt and so inspiring!!! I love it! Thanks for sharing – I might have to give quilting a go sometime.
High five to trying quilting sometime! Thanks Trina!
I love this & it turned out absolutely adorable! It’s also such a great idea for any sort of gift since it can be so customizable & sentimental. Like you said, it definitely tells a story!

Thanks so much Madi! Yes they do make awesome gifts don’t they?!?! I’m excited to think of stories for my own kiddos to make them one too… but maybe on a smaller scale, like a pillow cover or something! xo
Voww, this made me remember my school days. old is gold. This is really refreshing and new creative idea to make young kids learn this. I will try this.
Thanks Heena! xo
I love this idea! It is such a great way to remember your time during nursing school. I tried to make a quilt years ago. I never finished but this might be a fun craft to start with my daughter.
Yes I love the idea of quilting with your daughter! Teach them young! Love it! Thanks Ashley! xo
This is such a cute idea. I made a quilt like this while in elementary school. However now even as an adult I love this idea even more. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Janay! That’s awesome to hear! What a great creative kid idea, to start them sewing young, and get them to make their own story telling quilts! Thanks so much for the idea!
What a lovely idea! I love the story this tells. I’m sure it will be a cherished memory forever!
Thanks so much Lauren! I’d love to make another applique quilt that has more meaning for my family. Oneday! LOL…
Omg you did a wonderful job. I have a 2 year old niece that will love something like this. I am giving this a try today 🙂
Thanks you! YAY! I’m so glad to hear. It’s so easy to applique. I’d love to see what you come up with! Have fun creating!
