Rainbows! One of life’s beautiful phenomenons! They make you stop and admire their beauty, and then you wonder if there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?!?!
BREAKING NEWS: There really isn’t an end to a rainbow!
MORE DEVASTATING NEWS: Nor is there any pot of gold…
Sorry to let you down… but I did a little research and found out that the Irish saying, “a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow” actually came from people who believed that a pre-Celtic race of “little people” (later called “leprechauns”), buried their dead loved ones with their valuables. However, these burial grounds have never been found, thus they are said to be found at the end of a rainbow… (this is a very brief explanation of what I found explained here)
Weird right!
Even if this is true… can you imagine the karma that you would have after stealing from the dead! Pfffttt, No thanks!
So now we are making rainbows without the pot of gold… and here we go… wink!

Kids Craft Idea: Cookie Cutter Rainbow Melty Beads
EMBROIDERY THREAD RAINBOW CRAFT FOR KIDS
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Embroidery Thread (in lots of different colors)
- Wire (flexible enough to mold into a rainbow shape, without killing your fingers)
- Scissors
- Possibly Wire Cutters (I didn’t need them to cut the wire, but if you use thicker wire you will probably need them)
METHOD:
Step 1: Cut a piece of wire about a foot and a half long, and form it into the shape of a rainbow.
Create “feet” for the rainbow by forming the wire a bit wider than the rest of the rainbow (this will stop the thread from unraveling off the ends), and fold it back 90 degrees (so that the rainbow will stand-up by itself).
Step 2: Tie one end of the first colors of the Embroidery Thread to the foot of the wire rainbow form, and get your kiddos to start winding the embroidery thread around the rainbow (they may wind for a looooooong time).
Step 3: When it’s time to change colors, help your kiddos to tie the ends of the treads together with at least 3 knots (or just do it for them), then trim the threads ends off. You can tuck the little ends of the treads inside the rainbow at the end.
Step 4: Tie the end of the last color to the end of the rainbow, and stand up it up on its little “feet”.
You could do lots of different things with this little embroidery thread rainbow. Such as turn it into a:
- Cake Topper
- Cupcake Topper
- Party Decorations
- Rainbow Mobile
- Rainbow in a Fairy Garden
- Wall Hanging (make it bigger)
I hope this little rainbow craft inspires you to get creative with your kiddos. You could also use different fiber materials such as yarn, or wool to change up the look. Or make a giant one with thicker wire and thicker yarn.
Get creative with your kids, I’m sure you will have a great time, and make beautiful memories!
Until next time, enjoy the magic of a rainbow (but without the dead ones treasure), and enjoy creating beautiful things everyday!

What a fun idea it reminds me of when I was a teenager we used to braid small sections of our hair and wrap them with embroidery tread much like this, for a fun funky look in the summers. LOL the things we do in our youth.
Totally! Oh the good ol days! Thanks Jen!
What a neat idea. That would look so cute on top of a cake! I love it!
Thanks so much. Xo
