SUPPLIES NEEDED TO MAKE A BACKPACK WITH PATCHES:
- A Backpack! – I got Ivy a knockoff Fjallraven Kanken Backpack called KALIDI Fancy Forest Backpack from Amazon. Super awesome backpack for half the price!
- Awesome Fun Embroidered Patches (find links to my favorite online patch shops below)
- Fabric glue – Permanent Adhesive
- OPTIONAL: Needle and Thread to reinforce the patches
NOTE: The reason we are not ironing the patches on (even though most of them are iron on patches) is because not all backpack fabrics can be ironed. To be safe and not melt our backpack we will be using a fabric adhesive to attach the patches to the backpack, which is just as good as ironing them on and is so much easier!!

STEPS TO MAKE A BACKPACK WITH PATCHES:
Step 1: Make sure the backpack you are going to use is clean.
Step 2: Fill the inside of the backpack up with books to make the back pack more sturdy, and so that your patches can lay flat.
Step 3: Lay out your patches on the backpack where you want them to go, to make sure they all fit, and to make sure they all look great together!
Don’t forget to add patches to the sides of your backpack too! Like this…
Step 4: Add some Fabric Glue (I used Fabri-tac Permanent Adhesive) to the back of your embroidered patches, and place them onto your backpack. Smooth it down flat making sure the whole back surface of the patch is adhered to the backpack. Make sure the edges are stuck down good!
Step 5: Let them dry and keep adding more patches until its perfect and you just couldn’t love it anymore!
Don’t forget to add some small cute patches to the backpack straps too! Ivy loves her little kitty patch friends so much!
Optional Last Step: If you find that your patches are starting to lift off the backpack (ours haven’t yet) you could hand stitch them down to give them a little more support.
I hope this fun easy tutorial on how to make a DIY backpack with patches by just gluing them down, inspires you to create your own awesome personalized backpacks too! Its so easy and their is endless ways to make your backpack all your own.
Until next time, enjoy shopping for super fun patches (it’s pretty addicting), and creating beautiful things everyday! Wink!
