In the spirit of Easter I thought I’d create some sort of bunny chandelier (ok… ok… I know it looks more like a baby mobile) for our naked kitchen table light bulb! We have lived in our home for almost a year and a half, and we have never done anything about the fact that there is just a light bulb hanging above our eat-in-kitchen table… However, It’s not because I have been lazy about it… but instead I am having a really hard time deciding what kind of light to get. Should it be a Joanna Gaines inspired large and beautiful (but inexpensive) glass pendent light or a circular wood light??? Or should it be a Jillian Harris inspired metal framed light like she has over her dining room table (but on a smaller scale obviously), or like her industrial pendant light that focuses the light down onto the table??? I really can’t decide! I feel overwhelmed by all the decisions, mainly because I know I’ll change my mind. And since Shawnikins is a do everything yourself type, I know he will not entertain installing a light, and then changing it out as I change my mind 100 times. WHAT DO I DO?? I need an interior designer right now! Well actually not right now, because I made a DIY Easter bunny mobile chandelier (problems solved, hehe), to cover up our light bulb! lol. It totally looks like a baby mobile!
DIY EASTER BUNNY MOBILE TUTORIAL
MATERIALS NEEDED FOR A DIY EASTER BUNNY MOBILE
- Baking soda clay (here is the link to the recipe)
- Easter Cookie cutter set (you could really use any Easter cookie cutters)
- Skewer (to poke holes in your clay pieces to hang them from)
- Paint
- Paint Brushes
- Wreath Form (or something round to hang your clay pieces from… embroidery hoop?)
- Fiber fill stuffing (to create the cloud)
- Hot Glue Gun and Hot Glue Sticks
- Old Tooth Brush (to create splatters on your Easter egg shapes, if you are going for the Robin Egg look)
- Thread (to hang your pieces up… I chose light blue thread)
- Thick Yarn or Rope (to hang your mobile to the ceiling or to a light fixture that is already attached to the ceiling)
METHOD TO MAKE DIY EASTER BUNNY MOBILE
Step 1: Make your Baking Soda Clay using my recipe that can be found in my Baking Soda Clay Handprint Tutorial! After you make your clay, roll it out about 1/4 inch thick and use your cookie cutters to make your shapes. I made 4 Easter eggs and 12 little bunnies!!
Don’t forget to use a skewer to poke a hole in each cookie cutter piece so that you will be able to hang it up!
Then let them dry!
Step 2: After you cookie cutter pieces are completely dry you can paint them with any colour or pattern that you think is awesome. I chose to paint little bunnies on the little bunny shapes (so original… I know) and I attempted to try to make my Easter eggs look like Robin’s eggs. Remember to paint both sides and the edges of your cookie cutter pieces as all sides will be seen! By the time you paint all 12 front sides of your bunnies, they will be dry enough to paint the other sides.
To create the Robin egg look I painted my cookie cutter egg shapes 4 different shades of blue and then took gold paint and put a few drops of it on an old but clean tooth-brush (Corbin was horrified that I put paint on his Daddy’s old tooth-brush), Then I ran my thumb over the bristles to let the paint spatter off. I’d suggest practicing on something besides your project first to get the splattering effect down. Like this…
Then go for it! Don’t forget to Robin Egg splatter both sides of your cookie cutter pieces!
Step 3: String up all of your pieces! To do this you will need your wreath form (or something round and sturdy), and thread!
So… I knew I wanted all of my pieces to be at different heights, and that I wanted my eggs to be at the top, so that’s where I started. First I hung up all of my robins eggs! Like this…
Then I hung each of the little bunnies up one at a time holding up my wreath between each one to see where I wanted the next little bunny to hang. Like this…
Step 4: Create a way to hang up your mobile! Tie on the yarn (or rope) to your wreath form on 4 sides of your wreath. Like this…
Each piece of my yarn is about 2 feet long. I am planning on hanging this DIY Easter bunny mobile to an existing light fixture that is already attached to the ceiling. If you are planning to hang your DIY Easter bunny mobile to your ceiling you need to measure at what height you want your mobile to hang and measure that distance from you ceiling. That measurement, plus about a foot, is the length of yarn (or rope) that you will need to hang up your mobile (times 4 for each side)!
Then your DIY Easter bunny mobile will look something like this!
Step 5: Hang it up!
Step 6: I didn’t forget about covering up the wreath form… sillies! It is a lot easier to cover it when it is hanging.
So, I decided to cover the wreath form with fiber fill (stuffed animal stuffing), to make it look like a cloud! To do this just take small clumps of fiber fill, put a dollop of hot glue on it and stick it on your wreath form! Easy peasy!
And, don’t worry the fiber fill is not touching the light bulb. It’s about 2 inches away on all sides! (wink). Please don’t burn down your house!
And DONE! YAY!
Feel inspired? lol! I hope so.
So, after I made this DIY Easter bunny mobile (chandelier, lol), I am thinking that this would actually look much better in a baby nursery!! If you believe that your newborn loves baby bunnies, then this would be a fun DIY project for you. I think this bunny mobile would look super cute over a newborns crib. I say newborn because although Ivy still sleeps in her crib I wouldn’t hang it over her, because she would pull it down in 2 seconds. I think mobiles are for babies that can not yet stand up. Right???
So back to my problem with actually finding proper eat-in-kitchen lighting!!! If anyone would give their suggestion on which light would look best, I’d love to hear it! Thanks so much friends!
And… Thanks so much for coming along on this creative adventure. Until next time, enjoy creating chandelier mobiles, and creating beautiful things everyday!
