It’s that time of year when the birds are chirping, the freezing snow and ice has melted, and it’s warm enough to go outside without a jacket on… IT’S ABOUT TIME! It’s also that time of year when everyone collects sticks to create their very own Easter tree!
Did you know this was a thing? Apparently I live under a rock, and have not partaken in this tradition before, so excuse my first Easter Tree attempt. I hope I’m doing it right?!?! I love how much fun the kiddos had putting it together, and making it’s Easter decorations! I think we will be continuing this Easter tree tradition each year… like everyone else!
HOW TO MAKE GLASS EASTER TREE DECORATIONS
MATERIALS NEEDED:
GLASS GEM EASTER DECORATIONS
- Large Clear Glass Gems
- Cardstock Paper (White, or in different Easter colors)
- Pencil
- Sharpies (they won’t bleed when covered in Mod Podge)
- Mod Podge
- Paint Brush
- Scissors
- String or Twine
- Felt Fabric (for the backing) I also used some of Ivy’s old flowery stretchy pants, so any fabric would work.
EASTER TREE
- Tree Branches
- Large Vase – that will support large branches
- Vase Filler (such as Easter eggs, Easter treats, moss) – OPTIONAL
NOTE: If you don’t want to use Sharpies I found this resource “USING MOD PODGE WITH INK, MARKERS, PENCILS, AND MORE” that will help you decide what you can use with Mod Podge that won’t smudge!! Wink!
METHOD:
Step 1: Trace the outline of your glass gem onto your card stock paper and then draw your Easter picture with Sharpies inside the circle (You will be trimming your picture just a bit so put your picture to the center of the circle).
I’m aware that Sharpies are not ideal for kids, we call them “The Dangerous Felts” in our house, because if they get on anything they will “never ever EVER” come off, including on their skin… So the kids are VERY VERY careful with them. However if you do happen to get it on a surface that you don’t want it on, here is a link to the secret to getting it off (HOW TO REMOVE SHARPIE).

Step 2: Use a paint brush to add Mod Podge to the flat side of the glass gem.
We decided to use the glossy Mod Podge, but there are tons of different kinds these days. It’s a cray Mod Podge world out there!
Step 3: Cut out your drawings, and put them face down on the Mod Podge side of the glass gem. Like this…
Step 4: Cut 3 inch pieces of string or twine and use the Mod Podge to stick it to the back of your Easter decoration to create a loop to hang it from. Like this…
Step 5: Cut pieces of felt or fabric to cover the back of the Easter decoration. Attach it by adding a layer of Mod Podge to the back of the decoration and then adding the fabric.
Don’t worry about the fabric being the exact size of the glass decoration. As long as its a bit bigger than the glass decoration, it can be trimmed after it is dry. Like this…
Done!! I currently have young kiddos that are just starting to be able to draw shapes that represent anything. Lol… I’m excited to add new glass gem decorations to our Easter tree each year, as their drawing ability just get better and better.
Check em all out!
Then all you have to do is put your beautiful Glass Gem Easter Decorations your Easter Tree!
I hope you are inspired to create your own glass gem decorations for your own Easter tree. You could use this technique to create different kinds of decorations such as:
- Writing little wishes on them to make an Easter wishing tree.
- Cut out photos of Eastery things and Mod Podge them to the glass gems.
- Make them Christmasy to make Christmas tree decorations.
- Write peoples names on them to create cute gift tags.
Until next time, have the happiest Easter, and enjoy creating beautiful things everyday!
