I discovered the cutest way to upcycle all those old tank tops in your closet into the cutest little girls dresses! They are the easiest thing to make, and Miss Ivy always gets complemented on her outfit when she wears one. AND I MADE IT! I didn’t even do much to create it either. It’s a no sew project guys! That doesn’t happen often around here. So… Check it out!
P.S. It was very hard to photograph a 2-year-old in multiple dresses… But we did it!! Although the photos are a bit blurry. Sorry, but you get the idea! If you didn’t know 2 year olds MOVE A LOT!
HOW TO MAKE A LITTLE GIRLS DRESSES OUT OF OLD TANK TOPS
Materials Needed:
- A Tank Top that you no longer wear. Actually it could be a tank top that you love (that you trust your child to wear and not ruin), because this upcycled little girls dress can be reversed, so that you can wear it as a tank top again!
METHOD TO MAKE A LITTLE GIRLS DRESSES OUT OF OLD TANK TOPS
Step 1: Take all the tank tops out of your closet that you no longer wear… In my case this was a lot!!
Step 2: Take the top of the strap and tie it in a knot!
Step 3: Put it on your child!
Step 4: Enjoy the cuteness!
I made 8 fun little girls dresses! But here are just a few of her faves that I could get her to wear. (wink)
The last tank top turned little girls dress has some lace which to me, kind of gives it a nighty look. So you could also make a bunch of nighties for your little girl out of your old tank tops! So fun!
I hope that these little no-sew little girls dresses inspire you to look into your closet to find ways to upcycle your own clothing that you no longer wear, and turn them into the cutest kids clothes!
These cute little girls dresses are not just summer dresses.. think tights and a little sweater over top. Super cute outfit for any season of the year!
Also if you are a little more adventurous you could just sew your straps where you have the knot, and then cut the knot off. You could take it even a step further and sew a crotch onto the bottom of the tank top to create a romper! So many ideas!!
I wrote another tutorial on how to upcycle old stretchy pants or tights, into cute toddler pants! That tutorial can be found here!
Let me know if you have more ideas of how to upcycle your clothing for the kiddos in your life? I’d love to hear your ideas!
Until next time, enjoy upcycling and creating beautiful things every day!

What a great idea! And if you buy 2 matching shirts you could have cute mommy and me outfits 🙂
Awwww. I didn’t even think of that. Thanks so much for that idea Sheri! Love it!
The pictures are perfect Jenna, and what a cute idea! Love that it can actually be two-fold with some being used as summer nightgowns too! And just in case you miss the tank top a wee bit too much, voila, just untie and wear it again yourself. Very clever!
Thanks so much Lisa! I always look forward to your comments. So thoughtful! Have a beautiful day! ❤️
This is such a good idea. Especially for being around the house. I hate seeing how my girls get their new clothers dirty, so I will have to try this trick.
Thanks Nailil! Yes!! Awesome for around the house/play clothes! Not to warm for those hot days and so easy to put on a squirmy toddler. Lol.
