What’s cuter than a bow in a little girls hair?!?! How about a bow that blings in a little girls hair!! Well, I have just the tutorial to make your own fun sequin hair bows too. They are fun to create, and make awesome gifts for all the little girls in your life!
I make these bows in 2 different styles. I love the look of the big sailor bow in a little girls hair for those over the top cute looks, but I especially love a little knot bow, or 2 little knot bows, one on each little pigtail! A Knot bow is super easy to make, so I’ll focus this Sequin hair bow tutorial on how to make the Sailor bow! Awwwww I miss little Ivy with her 2 little baby hair buns with little bows on them. Now she barely lets me do her hair anymore. Sad face…

MATERIALS NEEDED TO MAKE SEQUIN HAIR BOWS:
- Sequins!!! – I got all of my sequins from the dollar store (or 10 different dollar stores), but I’ll list a bunch of cute ones from Amazon at the end of this tutorial!
- Small Glass Beads
- Coordinating Colored Thread
- Thin Beading Needle
- Fabric – I used Velvet
- Scissors or Rotary Cutter
- String
- Ruler
- Hair clips
- Hot Glue Gun and Hot Glue Sticks
- Sewing Machine (you could use a needle and thread or even fabric glue!)
METHOD TO MAKE SEQUIN HAIR BOWS:
Step 1: Plan ahead by first choosing the fabric that you want to make the sequin hair bows out of, then find sequins that compliment the color of the fabric. Otherwise you will just want to buy all the sequins in the world… like I did… Lol… You don’t need all the sequins in the world, even though it may feel like you need all the sequin options in the world! Or just go for it… No one ever has enough sequins right?!?!… LOL
Step 2: Cut out the fabric. The sizes of fabric (velvet) that you will need for one Sailor Bow are:
- 1 – 5 inch x 16 inch fabric – for the bow and tails
- 1 – 5 inch x 2 1/2 inch fabric – for the middle of the bow
Step 3: To create the points of the tails of the sequin hair bows, fold your bigger piece of fabric in half along the length of the fabric, with the open sides of the fabric faced to the top of your table. Trim a corner off (its does not need to be an exact 45 degree angle). Place the triangle piece you trimmed off on the other end to make sure both angles are the same, and then trim off other end. When you open you fabric up it should look like this!
Step 4: Turn your bigger piece of fabric right sides together and with your sewing machine sew along the edge, leaving a spot open in the middle to be able to turn it right said out. Then turn it right side out! Like this…
OPTIONAL: You could use a needle and tread or even fabric glue instead of a sewing machine.
Step 5: Use your hot glue gun to glue the opening of the bigger piece of fabric closed. Like this…
Step 6: Make the bow. Fold your longer piece of fabric like the photo below, and then pinch the middle of it and wrap a string around the middle to hold it in place. Like this…
Step 7: To make the center of the bow, add a line of hot glue just off center of the bow, and glue down one side. Then add another line of hot glue on the edge of that fabric, and glue down the other side. Like this…
Step 8: Add the center of the bow. Lay the center of the bow face down with the bow face down on top, like the photo below, and add a dollop of hot glue to the center of the bow. Glue the bottom end of the center of the bow down. Then add another dollop of hot glue to the center of the bow, and glue the top of the center of the bow down, while pulling it tight! Then trim off the excess of the middle of the bow. Like this…
Step 9: Add the bling to your sequin hair bows! Start by doubling your thread and knotting it off at the end of the string. Bring the string up through the inside of the bow to hide the knot at the end of the string. Then it’s the best part of all!!!! Start adding the sequins!!
Step 10: To secure the sequins to the sequin hair bows you need little glass beads! So, go up through a sequin, then a glass bead, then back down through the sequin and into the fabric. Then back up through the fabric to add your next sequin! It’s so easy… and very addicting!
You can start layering your sequins too!! Try adding a bigger sequin with 1 or 2 smaller ones on top of it, then secure it with a glass bead. Like this…
Then just keep adding beautiful combinations of sequins and glass beads till you feel you can’t add a single spec of more bling! AWESOMENESS!!
Step 11: To secure the sequin hair bows to a little ones head, just hot glue a clasp to the back of the bow. AND DONE!!!!
There you have it! The cutest sequin hair bows that bring all the bling you would ever need on a little ones head! You can make different styles of bows, use different fabrics, and use all the different color combinations of sequins that you can dream up to make this bow unique!
