Cheap fun adventures are where it’s at when you share your life with young kiddos!! Am I right? Spending money frivolously on something they wont remember in 2.2 doesn’t compute in my thrifty brain, so I am always on the search for awesome adventures that don’t brake the bank! AND we found one!
Big White Ski Resort is just a 45 minute drive out of Kelowna B.C., making it the perfect day trip for locals, and Kelowna vacationers to enjoy the slopes, or experience some other fun family friendly mountain amenities!
And if you are on a budget, I have you covered with a fun winter adventure, perfect for the families with little ones (5 and under).
More Budget Friendly Adventures with the Kiddos
HOW TO SPEND A FUN DAY AT THE MOUNTAIN FOR ONLY $23!
First things first… I highly suggest checking the weather (wind on the mountain sucks), and temperature before heading out. Temperatures under -5 are pretty miserable for the young kiddos (and for many adults, me included!). Always wear layers to keep warm, and as with any outdoor winter adventure, Big Unicorn tuques are highly recommended! Wink!
BIG WHITE SKI RESORT: TUBING
Have you ever tried tubing? If you haven’t, and you have kids that are 3-5 years old, this is a perfect fun winter adventure that you can accomplish on a budget!
Tubing Trick to Paying Less:
One adult pass at Big White Ski Resort is $23. But you are thinking… “That’s your whole budget for the day?!?!”
That’s Right. One parent goes up with the kiddos at a time, while the other stays at the bottom enjoying the bonfire, keeping all of your belongings safe… And taking videos of the rest of the family flying down the mountain!
The adults can pass the Tubing pass to each other at the bottom of the tubing hill before heading back up…
or BONUS, If you go with another family, and they buy one adult tubing pass, you can share both, so 2 parents of one family can go together with their kiddos, while the other family waits, and then switch. Or the dads could go with the kiddos, while the moms get cozy by the bonfire (or sneak away for a sneaky drink)! So many options!
FREE GONDOLA RIDE TO THE VILLAGE & BACK
The bottom of the Gondola is right between the Tubing area and the Lodge, making it a perfect time to jump on and enjoy a free ride through the trees and village. The kiddos will love looking down, as the skiers and snowboarders pass underneath them! PLUS It’s a perfect place to warm up a little bit, from your windy high speed tubing adventure.
If you don’t want to actually go to the village… just go for the ride… don’t get off at the top, and just ride back down. The ride is the fun part for the little kiddos anyways!
HOW TO EAT HOT FOOD ON THE MOUNTAIN WITHOUT SPENDING ANY MONEY THERE!
Tailgate Fire Pit Party! That’s right! If you own a portable propane fire pit, or know someone who does (that you like hanging out with), pack it up to keep the family warm, while you cook up something hot on a portable BBQ!
Don’t forget some fold up chairs and sleds!! We parked on the back side of the outdoor ice-rink to enjoy our tailgate party. There was a hill right beside us that the kiddos enjoyed sledding down, while they waited for their hot-dogs to be cooked!
List of things to bring for Tailgate Party:
- Portable Propane Fire Pit
- Portable BBQ
- Folding Chairs for everyone
- Blankets
- Sleds (optional)
- Food (Hot-dog Supplies, Hamburger Supplies, Veggie Platter, Easy Bagged Salad, Chips & Dip, Treats like S’more Supplies)
- Sneaky Drinks (Premade Hot-chocolate for the kiddos, & to-go cups with something sneaky in it for the adults)
FREE OUTDOOR ICE SKATING
Big White Ski Resort has a huge outdoor ice rink for everyone to enjoy, everything from learning to ice skate (with the awesome skating poles), to a friendly competitive hockey game.
Just bring your own ice skates, helmets (highly recommended for the little ones), and thick gloves!!
It’s a great large ice-rink to learn how to skate on!
Check out Ivy’s determination to learn how to ice skate! She was out there for 2 hours and kept telling us she wouldn’t give up until she learned!! She definitely didn’t get her determination from me. I’d be seeking warmth an hour before she would. Love her strong girl guts!
And that’s how we finished off the day. It was so much fun! I think this may be one of our top go to winter adventures, that we will be sharing with our friendliest friends that come for visit each winter!
Until next time, enjoy some awesome inexpensive winter adventures, and enjoy creating beautiful things everyday!
XO JCL
Wow! It sounds like such fun, and your idea of sharing the pass is brilliant!
Thanks Amy! Right?! xo
What a fun day! This looks like a great family adventure.
Thanks! Have an awesome day!
This was great, we’ve been hesitating on taking our little one on a “winter” vacation but didn’t know how to make it fun for her! This has definitely inspired me to start planning one!!! Your kids look like they had a blast!
Thanks Nicolette! YES! So much fun! I’m excited for you to experience a winter adventure with your little one too! Much love!
Being from South Mississippi we do not see snow much and nothing like this. Looks fun. Wish I got to see more snow!
I wish you had more snow too! Xo
Snow – just looks wonderful – I am in Australia and have never been on or near it… Well maybe one. You all looked in great holiday mode!
Hello there in Australia!! I hear it’s summer there right now. We live in Canada where it snows heavily for about 5 months. Well at least in Kelowna lately. I do wish it was shorter! Lol.
Sounds like such a fun day, your kids looked like they had a blast…also can’t get over Ivy on the skate rink…SO cute! I’ve never been to a ski resort before, so $23 sure does sound like a deal to me, even though I’d probably end up by the bonfire too!
