A to the B to the C… Anyone else out there have kiddos that are struggling to learn the names of each letter of the alphabet? Even after reading multiple different ABC books to the kids, trying your hardest to support their alphabet knowledge, and you are still feeling like you are not getting anywhere with them remembering what most of the letters are for? Well I have a fun little project for you today! We are going to make DIY Personalized Alphabet Flashcards!
This is a fun and personalized way to help your kiddos out with their ABC letter recognition, instead of working through alphabet books with words that your child doesn’t have a connection to.
Ivy’s amazing teacher came up with this idea, and I just had to share it with you, in hopes that you can help out your struggling child too! She recommended we take photos of things around our home, that Ivy has a strong connection to. Hopefully this will help build her letter recognition with the letters associated with each of her own things! What a brilliant idea!
I will walk you through how we made our own fun personalized alphabet flashcards, so you can make some happy personalized Alphabet Flashcards too! They make the cutest memory keepsakes too. Hopefully this works… Wink!

SUPPLIES NEEDED TO MAKE PERSONALIZED ALPHABET FLASHCARDS:
- Your Kid!!
- Camera – I used my iPhone on Portrait Mode
- Canva.com – Free Digital Photo Editing Website (How I got the Letters on the Photos)
- Photo Printer
- Photo Paper
- Paper Cutter/Scissors
- Laminator
- Hole Punch
- Pipe Cleaners
STEPS TO MAKE PERSONALIZED ALPHABET FLASHCARDS:
Step #1: Brainstorm ideas of things your kiddo loves, that start with each letter of the alphabet. Discuss ideas with your child, so that they can think of multiple things that start with each letter. Make the whole experience of creating these personalized alphabet flashcards fun, and educational at the same time. Add treats that start with some of the letters, and they will absolutely love this activity! Wink!
Step #2: Take photos of your child with all of these items. Best photos are taken in natural light by a window, so do this project during the day!
Step #3: Select your favorite photos from the 1000’s that you took, and edit them. I use the an app on my phone called Lightroom (it’s free). And yes! I take all of my photos on my iPhone! You can do it too!
Step #4: Use the website Canva.com to add each letter of the alphabet to it’s corresponding photo. It’s easy and fun!
Step #5: Print out your personalized alphabet flashcards onto photo paper with your photo printer. I printed 9 flashcards per sheet of paper, so that the finished size of the flashcards will be the size of a deck of cards. But you can make your flashcards bigger or smaller, whatever size you think would be effective for your child’s learning. Bigger would probably be great for younger children to play with.
Step #6: Cut your personalized alphabet flashcards apart with a paper cutter. Scissors could also get this step done in a jiffy!

Step #7: Laminate your flashcards! I’m EXTREAMLY glad I did this, because as soon as Shawnikins got home from work, someone (not naming names here) spilt a whole glass of orange juice all over these freshly laminated flashcards. Crazy face! Lamination for the WIN! So LAMINATE THEM!!!!!
Step #8: Cut out each laminated card leaving a little tab in the left upper corner. Like this…
Step #9: Holepunch each of the laminated tabs so that you can string your perfect personalized alphabet flashcards together. I just strung them on some pipe cleaners.
Stringing them together is good for storage, and so that you can just throw them into your kiddos backpack for them to bring them everywhere they go! Make sure they can easily take them off of whatever you string them together with, so that you can mix up the letters!
DONE!! Then go throw orange juice on them! and you don’t even have to worry about them getting ruined……….. GAAAAA
Need some inspiration on what to take photos of? Here is a look at everything Ivy decided would help her to remember each letter of her alphabet!
Ivy and I had so much fun with this activity. And yes she was in her PJ’s all… day… long! She was having a little sick day. And this was the perfect sick day activity!
I hope this little personalized alphabet flashcard tutorial inspires you to find different ways to support your child’s learning. Not all kids learn the same way. Maybe by making education more personalized, it will be more fun to learn!
Until next time, have fun making education fun, and enjoy creating beautiful things everyday!

Your ideas are brilliant. Love that you not only make these cards, but they have meaning AND they serve an educational purpose.
I absolutely love this idea! My twins just turned 3 last week and they are very curious about letters. I’m going to have to make them a set of these. Great idea!
These are adorable and I love them! I plan to make some for my daughter when she gets a bit older.
Such a cute and educational idea for the alphabet learning! Love all the pics, they look so fun and full of learning ideas! My kids are teens but being an educator I can say for sure these are so useful for young kids! Thanks for sharing
This is a fantastic idea! I absolutely love the idea of teaching letters this way.
Seriously….this is such a cute and genius idea! I wish I still had kids this age and right now, I’m trying to rack my brain to think of people I know who do have kids this age to share this with. AND bonus…I love how you’ve laid out your blog. Great job.
Thanks so much Diane! Big hug!
