Camping Throw Pillow Sewing Tutorial – “Baby Gone Fishin”

I have some very exciting news to share with you!!!… It’s something we have been wanting to do for a very long time… It’s big!! It’s fun!! And it will greatly improve our summer time adventures! Can you guess??

We bought our first camping Trailer! YAAAAAYYYY!! And guess what… as of this moment we haven’t even seen it in person yet!! Are we crazy?? YES!! Lol…

No… for reals… we are super excited and we can’t wait to deck it out in all our DIY camping ideas (ok, probably more me…not Shawnikins…Lol)!!

What have you made for you camper trailer that is super awesome?? Please share as this is our first camper trailer, and I am in need of some fun inspiration!

So far Ivy and I made this fun camping throw pillow! Because every little girls bed in her trailer has to have a fun personalized pillow right?!?! She came up with the saying all by herself, and I think it is very, very, very, fitting for my little Ivy!

HOW TO MAKE A “GIRLY” CAMPING THROW PILLOW

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Camping Fabric (or fabric that reminds you of camping)
  • Solid Color Fabric (for the letters)
  • Soft Fabric (for the backing)
  • Sewing Machine (Optional: Zipper Foot)
  • Coordinating Thread
  • Embroidery Thread
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Zipper
  • Scissors or Fabric Rotary Cutter
  • 18 inch by 18 inch Pillow Insert
  • Old Pillow Cover (to use as a pattern)

METHOD:

Step 1: Make the backing of the throw pillow. Take your old throw pillow cover (inside out) and lay it onto the backing fabric. Trace and cut it out. Easy peasy so far! High five!

Step 2: Make the front of your pillow. I used 3 different fabrics that reminded me (and Ivy) of a hot summers day out, on the boat fishing our hearts out. So hot that it would make you want to jump right off the boat, into the water, and swim with the fishes!

We sewed the 3 strips of fun fabric together and then trimmed them to the size of the old pillow insert. And Ivy sat on my lap the whole time making sure every stitch was correctly placed!

Step 3: Cut out the letters of a saying that makes you smile! Ivy came up with this saying and it couldn’t be more perfect for her. “Baby Gone Fishin”.

My baby obsessed toddler (oh my word, she is not a toddler anymore… now she’s a big girl… cry…), absolutely loves fishing. We have a little fishing boat that we took out on the lake a few times last year, and she would sit there for hours, holding her little fishing rod, just waiting. I don’t think she has actually caught anything yet… that might be a whole other experience for my animal loving girly girl. Eeeekkk!!

Step 4: You can use your sewing machine at this stage to applique the letters onto the front of the pillow… or wait till the end, and hand stitch the letters on with fun colored embroidery thread, as I opted to do. I think using the sewing machine would be quicker and easier, but I have been enjoying hand stitching lately, so that’s how I made that decision. Up to you buckaroo.

Step 4: Add the zipper.

Lay your zipper face down on the bottom of the front of your throw pillow. Sew the bottom side of the zipper to the front on the pillow. Open the zipper up to sew past the zipper pully thing (that’s what it’s called right?!?!). Like this…

Then repeat this step to add the zipper to the back of the throw pillow too.

Step 5: Sew the front and back of the pillow together. Just make sure to unzip the zipper first so that you can flip it the right way out after!!

Step 6: Hand applique the letters onto the front of your pillow with embroidery thread.

Use some fabric adhesive to attach the letters to the front and then stitch around the letters.

Ummmm…. I didn’t use an adhesive… so it is possible to do it without, if you want it to take a whole day. It could have been so much easier if the letters didn’t move around! Your call girlfriend!

DONE! SCORE!! Now you can make throw pillows for every season, outside… inside… the trailer… so many possibilities! Let your creativity flow. You got this!
