Who loves cute bunnies?!?! We love cute bunnies!! We are super excited in this house for a certain bunny to come to our house soon. Probably more excited for all the chocolate eggs that are left all over the yard! fingers crossed the snow is gone by then!!! To get in the bunny spirit I thought I’d make the kiddos their own stuffed cute bunnies! I have to note, that I have never made a stuffed animal before, but from the way that these bunnies turned out I may go into the stuffed bunny business! LOL. Jokes, jokes… But I think they turned out super cute, and I just made my own simple pattern, which you can do too, so stick around and make one for your own kiddos! It makes a stuffed animal all that much special when you make it yourself! Cute bunnies for the win! (wink)
STUFFED CUTE BUNNIES TUTORIAL
MATERIALS NEEDED TO MAKE A CUTE STUFFED BUNNY
- Bunny material (I used white minky fabric, it’s not as think as the average minky fabric though, but you can make your as think and fluffy as you like. The minky is so cuddly soft.)
- Bunny ear fabric (I used quilting weight fabric that the kids pick out, I did give them each about 5 options, and I think they picked awesomely!)
- Cardboard or large paper to make a pattern on. (I used an old Lego box)
- Stuffing (I use Poly-Fil Premium Fibre Fill)
- Needle & Thread
- Yarn (in whatever colours you want you cute bunny’s tail to be, I picked 2 colours for each tail)
- Large Pom Pom Maker
- Scissors
- Writing Utensil
- Coordinating Thread
- Sewing Machine
METHOD TO MAKE A CUTE STUFFED BUNNY
Step 1: Make your pattern! This is the fun part! Free hand draw the outline of how you want your cute stuffed bunny to look. You don’t have to add the ears, because they will be sewn separately. Mine looks like this… LOL. My creativity makes me laugh sometimes! He’s cuuute! LOL!
Step 2: Cut out your masterpiece so that you now have a pattern. Like this.. you don’t need those little ear tufts. I just had them to show me where I imagined the ears were going to go. But it makes no difference if you have them or not!
Step 3: lay your pattern onto the fabric that you want his body made out of. I my case it’s white minky. I chose this fabric mainly because I have a bunch of it in my craft room from crafts I was going to make but didn’t get around to it. And I think that it’s the perfect material to make the cute bunnies super snuggly soft. I would possibly not use white in the future, because I can see these bunnies getting very dirty, very quickly!!
Step 4: Cut your fabric about 1/4 inch away from your pattern, all the way around! Like this…
Then cut a second one. you will need 2 fabrics in the shape of your pattern to make your cute bunny. In my case I made 4 because I making 2 cute bunnies!
Step 5: Draw and cut out a pattern for the shape of your cute bunny’s ears! Like this…
Step 6: Cut out 4 ears in your fabric. 2 will be cut out of the fabric you used for the body of the cute bunny, and the other 2 are cut out of the fabric that will be inside the cute bunny’s ears. Like this…
Looking so cute already!! LOL!!
Step 7: Ok we are going to make the ears first because we have to attach them to the cute bunny’s head before we sew the cute bunny’s head together!
With face sides of one of you body fabric ears and the inside ear fabric together sew around the length of the ears. Leaving an opening at the bottom to flip the ear the right way out. Like this…
Step 8: Once you bunny ears are flipped the right way out fold the edges of the base of the cute bunny’s ears towards the inside of the ears. Like this…
And sew them in place, like this…
Step 9: Place your ears where you want them on the cute bunny’s head, then flip them down so that the inside of the ear is face down on the face side of the cute bunny’s face… (Make sure you don’t sew them to the head without flipping your ears down. Look to the next 2 photos!!!!!)
Don’t sew them to the head like this!!!! they are just sitting there for ear placement!!!!
Sew them down like this!!! Ears pointing down on the cute bunnies face!
That way when you flip the ears up into proper cute bunny ear placement, then the ends of the ear are nicely tucked inside the bunny’s head! Like this… But now flip them back down for the next step!! LOL. Can I get more confusing?!?! Stay with me here!!
Step 10: Place the second bunny pattern on top of the bunny fabric you were just working on, with face sides together. Like this… The ears are under there! Make sure the ears are pushed to the center, as to not catch them when sewing around the sides of the bunnies head!!
Step 11: Starting at the top of one of the bunny’s legs start sewing around the circumference of the bunny. Go in the direction down the leg first! Start at that point so that the spot left open to stuff the bunny is on the side of the cute bunny. A middle location of the cute bunny to have easy access to all limbs for stuffing. Make sure to leave about 4 inches unsewn to flip the cute bunny the right way out! Like this…
Step 12: After you have sewn around your cute bunny and left an opening to flip, make some small cuts in the fabric to relieve the fabric tension in all the corners (Inside the legs – crotch area, Under arm area). Like this… If you don’t the cute bunny will not lay flat. He would be a wonky bunny, not a cuuuute bunny!
Step 13: Flip your bunny the right way out!! So exciting!! Your cute bunny is starting to take shape!!
Step 14: Stuff your bunny! Make sure to get that stuffing right to the ends of the arms and legs.
Step 15: Hand stitch the opening in the cute bunny’s side with a needed and coordinating thread. I love the invisible stitch for stitching stuffed items closed. You can find an awesome invisible stitch YouTube tutorial here. It’s a fast and effective stitch! I didn’t know hand stitching could be so easy!
Step 16: Don’t forget your cute bunnies’ fluffy TAIL!! I just made a big pompom and stitched it to their little bum bums!
YAY!! You have a naked cute bunny with no face!! So fun!!
So you can stop here and have a naked modern no faced cute bunny, OR you can embroider a simple cute face on the cute bunny’s face!! Like I did!
