Paint your fence BLACK!! I know… I too wondered why I was so drawn to images of gardens with black fences. I know it may feel like a crazy color…. believe me… I second, third, and forth questioned this choice before just doing it. But now that we have a fabulous black fence, the yard looks fresh, modern, it makes the fence just seem to disappear into the background, and it makes the color of anything in front of it just POP! Just look at all the Green in the garden glow in front of the fence. If you are thinking about it just take the plunge and do it!! You won’t regret it!
So, I was inspired to paint our fence black when my eyes were so drawn to all the amazingly beautiful black fenced yards that you can find while spending hours scrolling through Pinterest. Nothing compared to how good these fences looked. So I had to go bold and try it too. Here are some of those awesome yards that have Black fences that stole my heart!

BEAUTIFUL BLACK FENCE PAINT TO TRY IN YOUR OWN YARD:
- BEHR Marquee Exterior Paint and Primer in One – In the color “Slate”
So with dreams of black fences dancing in my head I went to home Depot to find the perfect Black Fence Paint. We were looking for an exterior paint instead of an exterior stain because half of our fence was old and already painted which a stain wouldn’t cover the same way as an unpainted fence would. So to make the whole fence uniform we decided to go with BEHR Marquee Exteriour Paint in the color “Slate”. Eeeeekkkk… So exciting!
Before painting we mixed up the paint really well, and made sure we all had our painting clothes and gloves on. Then we tested the paint on the fence and it didn’t make me smile…I thought about taking the paint back to the store… LOL. When it first went on it looked like a dark green/grey color, which wasn’t the look that we wanted… But we decided to wait and see what color it dried to, and it was so worth the wait! It was the Black color of my fence paint dreams!
Even the kids loved the black fence paint, but what they loved better was painting all the low areas of us! Hint: kids are awesome at painting low areas, so that you can focus on the tops. Much easier on the ol’back… Thanks kiddos!!
The whole backyard fence only needed one layer of paint and thank goodness for that because one layer took us 2 days to paint. There were a lot of bushes and plants to get behind, not to mention the detail of the lattice along the top of the whole fence… But it was soooo worth it! Check out the before and afters!
And look how awesome the flowers pop against a black fence. I look forward to planting more plants along our new black fence!
We also painted our raised garden beds black, and I love how they turned out. The green of the vegetable garden looks beautiful with the black wood!
So if you are looking to freshen up your yard, consider painting your fence with Black Fence Paint! It really is an exciting change that makes all the colors of the yard look amazing!
I hope our black fence makeover has inspired you to think about making this a project for your own yard! You want be disappointed!
