Fancy a spooky tray of Eyeballs? A collection of petrified eyeballs, is a must have decor item for any Halloween party, or haunted house, and you could have your very own collection too! Lol… I thought this would be a fun DIY Halloween Decoration to add to your entry way side table, or maybe on a haunted bar… But please don’t attempt to eat them… They are hard as a rock! Find out how you can easily make some eyeballs to decorate your home with too in the fun tutorial below! If you DARE!!
DIY TRAY OF SPOOKY EYEBALLS
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Rocks
- White Spray Paint (High Gloss) – Optional
- Acrylic Paint (white, black, blue, green, yellow, orange, brown)
- Fine Point Paint Brush
- Clear Spray Paint (High Gloss)
To turn the rocks above into the eyeballs below just follow my super easy eyeball rock painting tutorial!
METHOD:
Step 1: Collect some oval/round-ish rocks from the back yard.
Step 2: Wash and dry your rocks.
Step 3: Lay your rocks on some news paper in a well ventilated area and spray paint your rocks with a High Gloss White Spray Paint. This step is optional, but easier them hand painting each of your rocks white with a paint brush, which you can do if you don’t have any spray paint! wink!
Step 4: Let the white paint dry.
Step 5: Paint the pupil and outline of the iris (the coloured part of the eye) in black paint. Use a fine tipped paint brush to get best results. I only had a small child’s paint brush, which was not as exact as I pictured in my head, but I like how they turned out any way.
Step 6: Paint the coloured part of the eye with a light shade of the colour you want the eye to end up. In this case a light blue/green eye.
Step 7: Outline the pupil and iris, with a darker shade of the colour of the eye.
Step 8: Add another coordinating layer of colour to the iris.
Step 9: Add some highlight colour to the center of the iris.
Step 10: Touch up the pupil of the eye with more black paint.
Step 11: Add a bit of lighter colour to the bottom half of the iris (I think this gives the eyeball a bit more life), and a white highlight (light reflection) to the upper right side of the pupil (or wherever you imagine the light source coming from).
Step 12: Then make a bunch more eyeballs in different colours!
Step 13: After the paint has dried, spray your new eyeballs with a Clear High Gloss Spray Paint, to make them shiny like real eyeballs!
DONE!!
To display them I put some black fake spider webs on a serving tray, placed the rock eyeballs on top of the spider webs, and added a couple spiders! And there you have it! A Spooky Tray of EYEBALLS!!
If you are looking to make your own spiders I have some fun beaded spider inspiration here!
I hope this little tutorial inspires you to create your own Spooky Tray Of Eyeballs! You could use this tutorial to make a Halloween decoration all your own. Some other ideas include:
- Painting a bunch of bigger rocks to look like eyeballs (monster eyeballs), and use them as a center piece on your Spooky diningroom table.
- Mounting the eyeballs on a plack, and hanging them on the wall, or front door.
- You could find a way to incorporate the eyeballs into a wreath for the front door?
I’d love to see your creations! Have fun!
Until Next time, have a Spooky Halloween, and enjoy making beautiful things everyday!

Thanks so much Natasha! Much love sent your way!
Oh my gosh how amazing!! I don’t know if I can do the eyes as good as you but I am certainly going to attempt it. Super fun!
Awesome! Thanks Adrienne! I’m sure you can make them even better!
These are so cool, I imagine hiding them in the woods or along a path for Halloween would be fun. The technique is great and can be applied to even frosting for baked goods too. Awesome job!
Great ideas! I’d love to see some eyeball topped cupcakes!
This is interesting! Unfortunately, my country does not really celebrate Halloween, but I might keep this in mind for future parties!
Awesome! Thanks Audrey!
