Who loves rug hooking?? I sure do!! I think rug hooking is like painting with wool, or yarn. Time consuming, addicting, hand spasming, masterpieces! And they make the cutest personalized pillows, or in this case awesome Valentines Day Heart Wreath!!
If you care about how I became interested in rug hooking, check out my first rug hooking project, the Snowy Owl, which I eventually turned into a fun Rug Hooked Pillow. This Snowy Owl Project shows how I was first introduced to this beautiful, fun, time consuming, craft, and you are sure to be inspired by my friends moms beautiful original projects!
I also created this Rug Hooking Frame Tutorial so that you can get started on your rug hooking journey as inexpensively, and slowly as possible… because, why buy something when you can DIY it! Wink!
Now onto the tutorial!
HOW TO MAKE A RUG HOOKED HEART WREATH
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Burlap with Pattern Drawn On
- Yarn in different colors
- Rug Hooking Hook
- Rug Hooking Frame (Tutorial to DIY your own frame here)
- Tacs
- Scissors
- Sewing Machine & Thread
- Heart Wreath Frame (from Dollar Tree)
- Quilt Batting
- Hot Glue Gun & Hot Glue Sticks
METHOD:
Step 1: Trace the outline of your heart shaped wreath frame onto your burlap. Make it about a centimeter larger on all sides to allow for the curve or girth of the wreath frame.
Step 2: Create a design on your burlap. I drew this simple vine, leaves, and dot flowers. But you can be as creative as Picaso, or as simple as toddler scribbles.
Step 3: Spend hours and hours rug hooking your masterpiece. Like this…
NOTE: This is only my second time attempting a rug hooking project. The first time I ordered a kit from Deanne Fitzpatrick Studio, which came with strips of wool (the traditional material used to hook with), but I didn’t feel like sourcing out strips of wool, or investing in a wool cutter, or feel like cutting up wool… So I used yarn instead, since I have an abundance of the stuff around the house.
Step 4: Sew a zigzag stitch all the way around your project (outside and inside the heart. This stops the burlap from unraveling and destroying all of your hard work, when you cut the burlap. Like this…
Step 5: Place your heart wreath frame on top of some quilt batting and cut around it about an inch or 2 away from the edge. As well, cut the quilt batting inside of the heart wreath frame from the center to the edges. Like this…
Step 6: With the front side of the frame place down on the quilt batting, fold the quilt batting around the back of the wreath frame and hot glue it in place. Like this… HA!! Burnt your fingers didn’t ya!! Yeah me too… finger prints are so unneeded anyways…
Step 6: Cut your heart hooked project in the same way you cut your batting.
Step 7: Secure your rug hooked heart on top of the batting with hot glue. Like this… Beautiful!
NOTE: At this point you could create a backing to hide all of your folded over glued down mess… or leave it because it will be up against the door, wall, fireplace… and you really wont see it ever, unless you are taking it down to show your hard work to everyone who visits your home.
Step 8: DONE!! Find a place to display your masterpiece, and hang up you beautiful rug hooked heart wreath for everyone to enjoy! Especially your lover, because this rug hooked heart wreath pretty much sums up all of your love in one creative bundle of home decor joy.
I hope this little Heart Wreath Rug Hooking Tutorial inspires you to create a fun rug hooking project, or to find unique ways to use the heart shaped wreath frame from the Dollar Tree.
HONESTY MOMENT: I sat in the basement staring at this heart wreath frame and all of my craft supplies for 2 days before figuring out what I wanted to do with it… Creativity takes a long time… probably longer than actually doing the creative project in my experience. Good luck!
Until next time, Happy Valentines Day, and have fun creating beautiful things everyday!
XO JCL
I think this would also look beautiful framed (not adding the heart-shaped wreath ring behind it).
What a great idea! Id love to create another rug hooking project and frame it.
This is beyond cute! I always wanted to try arts and crafts but I’m not sure if I’m that artistic lol. But you made it look so easy so I might actually try this!

Thanks Nancy, Sounds like it’s time to try rug hooking again! Wink!
This is really pretty and looks a lot of fun to make!
Thanks Kat! You should give it a whorl. It’s a fun craft that can be done while sitting on the couch. And unlike knitting you don’t have to count or keep track of anything. It’s a great way to keep your hands busy! Hooked!
This is way too adorable!
Thanks Melanie!
