How to Sew a Microwavable Bowl Cozy – Don’t Burn Your Hands On a Microwaved Hot Soup Bowl Again!

Not only does this awesome Microwavable Bowl Cozy protect your hands when removing your hot bowl of soup from the microwave, but it also makes it possible to cozy up on the couch, while holding your hot bowl of soup, without burning yourself! It’s pretty much a magical experience!

A couple of years ago my beautiful aunty gifted me her homemade Microwavable Bowl Cozy, and it has been by far my most used handmade sewing item ever since. And since I use my super awesome bowl cozy so often, I had to recreate it, so that I can share the joy of a microwavable bowl cozy with you guys too!

SUPPLIES TO MAKE A MICROWAVABLE BOWL COZY:

Wrap-N-Zap 100% natural cotton batting to make microwavable bowl cozy

STEPS TO MAKE MICROWAVABLE BOWL COZY:

Step #1: Cut 2 pieces of 100% cotton fabric into 10 inch x 10 inch pieces. This is the size that I made for my soup bowls, but you can add an inch or two for bigger soup bowls, or even make larger rectangles to put around casserole dishes.

SIDE NOTE: I’m trying to share my love of holding a hot bowl of something with Shawnikins (I say something because he’s not as in love with soup as I am), so I tried to make this bowl cozy a little manly. Do you think he will like it?

Step #2: Cut 2 pieces of 100% Cotton Batting into the same size as you cut your fabric. In my case it was 10 inch x 10 inch pieces. Like this…

Step #3: With the back side of your fabric on the batting, sew a line from corner to corner to create an X. This keeps the batting and fabric together, especially when it comes to machine washing your microwavable bowl cozy. You want your magical bowl cozy to keep its shape!

Step #4: Fold one of your batting and fabric pieces in half (fabric face sides together) and mark a 2 inch x 1 inch area on the folded corner. Like this…

Step #5: Sew from one of these marked points to the other.

Step #5: Unfold and refold your fabric and batting the other direction.

Step #6: Measure and mark the same line, another 2 inch x 1 inch area on each folded corner.

Step #7: Then sew along this line. Like this…

Step #10: Place both pieces of your bowl cozy with face sides together, like this… NOTE: It doesn’t matter which one is inside the other. Your new bowl cozy will be reversible in the end.

Step #11: Sew around the edge of the bowl cozy. Leaving a few inches open to be able to flip the bowl cozy the right way out.

NOTE: Trim corners of inside out bowl cozy, to reduce the bulk of the corners when turned the right way out.
