A sweet little treat to whip up for your loved ones, topped with beautiful easy to create watercolor royal icing. And when I say easy… I mean I have never made sugar cookies or royal icing before, and these ones turned out delicious and are made with only a few ingredients!
I have a problem… I don’t bake often because if I do… I will eat it all!!! The only time I bake is for a reason, such as a holiday, the kids birthdays, or when the kids have a class party, or when I’m sad and don’t care what I eat! These special heart shaped watercolor royal icing sugar cookies were made for my kiddo’s class Valentine’s Day party, but you can use this easy recipe for any reason that you like to make cookies. I hope the reason you make these cookies isn’t because you are sad and you feel like you can eat the world… Wink!

METHOD TO MAKE DELICIOUS WATERCOLOR ROYAL ICING SUGAR COOKIES:
Step 1: Make your sugar cookie dough following the directions on your Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix.
Step 2: Use a cookie cutter to cut out the shapes of cookies that you want. We made hearts because they were for Corbin and Ivy’s Class Valentine’s Day Parties! But you could make any shape you want… I can imagine Dino shaped watercolored royal icing sugar cookies! Oh yeah!!
Step 3: Transfer your cookies to a parchment paper lined cookie sheet, and bake your cookies according to the directions on your cookie mix.
Step 4: While the cookies are baking you can whip up the Royal Icing! Place all the Royal Icing ingredients into a stand mixer with the whisk attachment (you could also use a hand beater), and mix on high speed for 1.5 – 2 minutes or until the icing will flatten out within 5 – 10 seconds. If you feel that the icing is too thick you can add a bit of water and if its too watery you can add some more confectioners sugar. (Original recipe for this Royal Icing can be found here).
Step 5: Remove your sugar cookies from the oven, and let them cool completely before attempting to add the Royal Icing to your cookies.
Step 6: When your cookies have cooled, place some of the Royal Icing inside a zip lock baggie, and make a small hole in one of the corners to be able to pipe the Royal Icing out of.
Step 7: When piping out your Royal Icing, start by outlining your cookie and then fill it in. You can use a toothpick to push the icing around to fill in the holes.
Step 8: Let the Royal Icing fully harden (2 hours) before you do any watercoloring on them. You can speed up the Royal Icing drying process by putting the iced cookies in the fridge for 30 mins!
Step 9: Make your watercolors! Mix a few drops of
Step 10: Use a clean paint brush to paint the watercolors onto your cookies! Like this…
Step 11: Optional – We sprinkled on some colored sugar sprinkles to make them sparkle!
These Watercolor Royal Icing Sugar Cookies turned out so delicious! I made 2 cookies each for each of the kiddos class mates, and the plates came back completely empty!
I hope this recipe idea has inspired you to create some yummyness for your peeps! They are really easy to make (especially since these cookies are made with a cookie mix, and the icing is made with Meringue Powder), and look super cute!
